Projects
Toonies for Tenors
Help bring Trinidad and Tobago’s national instrument to Niagara.
Your donation will go towards purchasing two Tenor Steel Pans from Trinidad and Tobago for educational purposes. A single tenor steel pan costs approximately $1500 CAD, and by donating $2 or more, your funds will help purchase steel pans for the Brock University Faculty of Education department for the Teacher Education Program.
Why $2?
This will allow future music teachers to increase their knowledge and diversify their learning on this culturally significant instrument. A $10 coin concept that commemorates the steel pan as the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, aptly named the TENor coin was proposed by artist Jesse Peter Andrews for the 50th Anniversary of the nation being a republic. Coincidentally the exchange rate between Canada and Trinidad is approximately 1:5, making a toonie the same value monetary as a tenor coin.
The goal
If the minimum goal of $1000 is reached, Twinning will contribute $500 towards the purchase as part of a memorial in the name of Patrick Nunes. Patrick Nunes was co-founder of PK Hummingbird, a local steel pan band in Niagara, and the St. Catharines Twinning Association would like to commemorate his dedication to the art and education of the Pan Arts by continuing his legacy with the education of steel pan in Niagara.
The campaign will end June 30, 2027. If the $1000 minimum goal is not raised, funds from donations will be allocated to educational bursaries to students at both Brock University and Niagara College.
